Tips To Control Dog Shedding

If you have had a dog for longer than a couple of months, chances are dog hair has started to become a problem in your home, am I right? But, while it is a healthy thing to see your furry friend get rid of damaged hair by dog shedding, that still doesn’t change the fact that some pet parents may not be so calm about the whole situation.  

After all, it can be quite tedious to have to clean up balls of fur around the house almost every day. It’s even more aggravating if you have to start picking dog hair out of your clothes before stepping out for work. So, let’s just get to the heart of the problem and talk tips on how to best to keep this hairy problem under control, shall we?

How To Keep Dog Shedding Under Control

#1. Adopt Proper Grooming Habits

This may seem like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how often people neglect brushing their dog’s fur. Even when they do, they don’t do it often enough or they don’t use the right tools. Now, to be fair, it can be quite a tedious process that can take hours of your time, so it’s somewhat understandable. 

This is why we suggest that instead of making it feel like a chore, perhaps try thinking of it, as your bonding time with your pooch! In most cases, scheduling a grooming session with them at least once a week will suffice. You can even pair it on a day, when you have less work on your hands, like Sunday afternoons!

And don’t forget that it is important to make sure that you have the correct grooming tools. You can always use a bristle-brush or comb for short-haired pets and a pin brush or slicker brush when dealing with big fluffy dogs, as their hair often ends up in mats and can get tangled.

You should also consider taking them to a professional groomer once a month or so, for a thorough session.

#2. Foster Regular Bathing Habits

Besides grooming, regular bathing habits are just as important in learning how to keep dog shedding at bay. This will not only keep their furry coats free of dirt and parasites but also remove matted fur.

You can also help eliminate excess shedding by using dog shedding shampoos and conditioners. They are specially formulated for dog fur and contain omega-3 or omega-6 fatty acids, which can help maintain coat health and reduce excess shedding.

Something important to remember is to always allow your pooch to dry naturally. This means avoid using high heat dryers that can sometimes damage your pet’s sensitive skin.

#3. Provide A Nutritious Diet

You must feed your pet a well-balanced diet because a poor diet can often affect the healthy growth of a dog’s fur coat. This means feeding them good amounts of protein and fat. 

Many dog foods contain healthy amounts of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids that help reduce excessive shedding, but if you aren’t sure what to get, you can always consult with your vet.

They must also drink plenty of water because dehydrated skin is a major contributor to hair loss and can lead to an excessive amount of shedding that you will be forced to clean up.
