Merrick Gourmet Sausage Treats – Yum!

Cowboy-cookout sausage treatsBack when we did the Merrick Chunky Can Recipes taste test, Merrick also sent us a Cowboy Cookout Gourmet Sausage Treat to try out. Our dog, Kobi, is super picky when it comes to treats. He’s often put me in an awkward position when he’s been offered a treat, takes it and then spits it out. Now I warn people that want to give him a treat that about 90% of the time he won’t eat it.

Yum!

Kobi LOVED the Merrick Cowboy Cookout Gourmet Sausage Treat. It’s a real sausage and is similar (in texture) to a hard Italian sausage. I would cut individual pieces, give them to Kobi for a treat and in between keep the sausage treat in the refrigerator.

Merrick Gourmet Sausage Treats are created from real meats from USDA, New Zealand and Australian growers. They include farm fresh vegetables & whole grains. These all natural sausage treats contain no artificial colors or flavors. Each sausage is individually wrapped to ensure optimum freshness.

We think it’s a perfect size for a dog gift. However you might prefer to get more than one for a large dog. But for our 18 lbs Havanese, this sausage lasted a while.

They come in a variety of flavors: Grammy’s Pot Pie, New Zealand Summer, Venison Holiday Stew, Thanksgiving Day Dinner, French Country Cafe and Cowboy Cookout Sausage Treats for dogs.

Dog Popsicles – a great hot weather treat

dog popsiclesWith the weather so hot outside, we’re sure your dog would love a dog popsicle treat. Lucily, they’re easy to make:

Dog Popsicle Recipe:

1. Get a carton of low sodium Chicken or Beef stock

2. Pour into popsicle molds, plastic cups or ice cube trays

3. Put in freezer

4. While it’s freezing and not yet completely solid, add a chew stick / bully stick. This will be the popsicle stick for your dog to chew on. If you’re having a hard time getting the stick straight, try covering the tray tightly with saran wrap and then poking the stick through the saran wrap.

5. Freeze until solid

6. Simply remove and give to your dog. We suggest letting them eat these outside or somewhere where things can get a bit wet.

Backcountry Grain Free Dog Food from Merrick

“I’m going to try Backcountry!”

We love grain free dog food and it’s also no secret we’re very fond of Merrick. This year Merrick came out with a new grain free dog food called Backcountry. Merrick calls it the ultimate all natural, grain free, high protein ancestral diet. The Dry Line has protein rich kibble, freeze-dried real meat pieces and comes in 4 recipes:

Backcountry’s a clear winner!

Our dog Kobi tested and LOVED the Game Bird Recipe. When we give Kobi new dog food to test, we always give him a bowl of his normal kibble and the new kibble to see how he likes it in comparison. Typically on the first try, he’ll eat a bit of each dog food. On the next few tries, we’ll see which one he really gravitates to.

With the Merrick Game Bird Recipe it was hands down a winner on the first try! Kobi ate a little of each and then completely ate all of the Game Bird Recipe. I think Kobi especially liked the extra freeze-dried meat. Kobi also had no bad side effects from trying this new grain free dog food.

Our dog Kobi tried the Stella’s Super Beef Meal Mixers and he LOVED them! While they’re called meal mixers, we confess that Kobi fished out the Meal Mixers first and then ate the rest of his normal kibble.
