Hugh Jackman and his stylish, urban dog Dali

hugh-jackman-daliToday we’re highlighting man (or Wolverine) and his best friend. Hugh Jackman hard at work pumping up his gorgeous body at a local NYC gym with his dog Dali, a cute French bulldog, for a little extra security and companionship. I’ve heard he’s filming the next X-man movie, X-Men: Days of Future Past, due out in 2014. There’s been some snarky media comments about Dali being his guard dog, but I think non-dog owners often don’t realize that smaller dogs can actually be quite protective and warn their owners of potential threats. It looks like Dali has logged a lot of gym time with “daddy” and must figure it’s a good time for a nap. I’m sure Hugh Jackman is in there for hours. I just wish we knew what gym this was in NYC and if it has a dog friendly policy for all members.

It always puts a smile on my face when I see dog owners integrating their best friends into daily activities from going to the gym to taking a walk on the beach. When well trained and exposed to social, urban environments, dogs can be really well behaved and fun to accompany us on our daily activities. Even the French understand that a well behaved dog in a restaurant or bar is ok and shouldn’t be considered an immediate health threat.

Let’s all hope one day in the future Hugh Jackman will put out a video on how to work out with your dog, featuring Dali!

Now that would be fun!

See Hugh scootering around with his dog…

Kobi’s Favorite Day and Travel Dog Bag

Dog Bag

Having a great dog bag is a vital necessity when you have a busy, on the go life with your dog. We tried out a lot of different bags for Kobi, but after trial and error, we came to love the PetEgo Boby Bag and Jet Set Pet Carrier.

You can see Kobi (with his friend Kelly) in the Boby Bag here on the left. The bag is stylish and lightweight. If I have it completely closed, people are often surprised I have a dog in it. It’s durable and Kobi has never even tried to destroy it. Note that Kobi did eat through some of the bags we tried out.

The Boby Bag is perfect for running around town (e.g. going on the subway), but not big enough for longer trips (e.g. plane) for Kobi as he’s almost 20lbs. If you have a smaller pet, it would likely be great for plane travel too.

When we need to go on a longer trip or travel via plane, we bring the Jet Set Pet Carrier. This is very stylish and fits underneath the seat in front of you when traveling via plane. We have not had any issues with flying him in this bag. People often don’t notice Kobi is in this bag too. It’s roomier for Kobi and comes with a variety of straps so you can use it as a handle bag, shoulder bag, back pack or car bag. It has flaps on the side, which allows you to give your dog a bit more privacy (e.g. if they are sleeping). It also has a nice comfortable double sided floor mat which can easily be taken out and cleaned. Our neighbors even borrowed the Jet Set Pet Carrier for their dog (Kobi’s girlfriend Fiesta) when they went on a trip via plane and it worked out nicely for them.

You can get both the PetEgo Boby Bag and Jet Set Pet Carrier in our shop.

Before 8:00am on a Sunday? I’m staying in bed!

“My mom is crazy…she’s gone off to run in some race which starts at 8:00am today. Doesn’t she know it’s not warm enough to do something like that? I’m cuddling up and going back to bed. I just love the Hotel Collection bedding.”

Dog Food – which one is right for your dog

dog-food
Finding the right dog food for your dog is not always as easy as it sounds. First of all, it’s really important to check the back of the label. You want to avoid by-products, corn, glutens, wheat and artificial preservatives.

There is also a list of scientifically named ingredients that you’ll also want to avoid, e.g. Propylene Glycol. I have a hard time remembering all the scientific names, so I find it easiest to go to: Dog Food Advisor and look up the dog food I’m thinking about purchasing to ensure it has a good review. They have quite an extensive list of dog food reviews (over 750) and also alerts on dog food recalls.

As far as my dog Kobi, he eats Vets Choice Holistic Health Extension Original. I used to give him Royal Canin, which was recommended by Kobi’s breeder, but my doggy day care (Fetch Club) also feeds their visiting dogs Vets Choice Holistic Health Extension Original. It’s much easier to keep him on the same dog food, that way if he eats a meal at his day care, he doesn’t have any digestive issues from switching brands. Vets Choice Holistic Health Extension Original is a great product and has a good review on Dog Food Advisor.
