We love our doggos… but don’t get me started on clean ups. Because they could be a handful, right? This is a problem that almost all pet parents deal with so believe me, it’s relatable.

In most cases, housetraining could solve the problem, but there are other factors that may result in accidents every now and then.

Luckily, one of the easiest ways to contain your doggo’s unsavory habits in the home is by using a dog belly band, and here’s why.

Why Are Dog Belly Bands Used?

Dog belly bands are very similar to diapers in that they essentially prevent your dog from leaving unwanted messes around the house. Several factors could be causing your dog to do this, even if they are house trained.

For instance, some dogs tend to mark. This happens when they feel the need to lay their claim to certain spots as their territory.

It’s a base instinct, and while it often happens outside the home, sometimes they could end up doing it indoors as well.

Other times, they could be suffering from urinary incontinence, where they can’t control themselves from doing the deed.

Such cases are not behavioral, as it could be due to a bladder infection or any number of health issues like diabetes.

This is why dog belly bands are popular, with different dog sizes sold to cater to all.

It is also because of this that you need to learn how to wash them too. After all, you don’t want to keep buying new belly bands, especially if the peeing problem ends up taking some time to resolve. It wouldn’t be very fair to your wallet!

When using belly bands, learning how to wash them the right way is crucial in keeping your dog’s health in check. Especially if the peeing is due to an illness.

The first thing you need to do is secure the belly band’s velcro straps before starting the washing process. Then, turn the belly band inside out and begin pouring laundry detergent on it.

Keep in mind that the detergent you intend to use must not contain any fabric softeners or bleach that could cause an allergic reaction to your dog. It can also damage the waterproof lining of the belly band, so take care to avoid that.

After that, you can choose to machine-wash it, in which case you can add a cleaning solution like Odormute to your detergent. It contains a natural blend of enzymes that do well to remove any lingering odors.

You can also opt to hand-wash it in warm water for better results. If you decide to do this, you can use a natural odor eliminator instead, by adding 1/2 cup – 1 cup of white vinegar in the water.

Once done, make sure to air-dry the belly band by hanging it outside. Do not use a dryer, as this could end up compromising its integrity. Some pet parents also suggest pre-soaking the soiled belly band before washing, which allows the dirt to wear off easier during the washing process.
