EzyDog – Award Winning Active Dog Products

EzyDog Cujo

The Cujo Leash

We fell in love with EzyDog when we saw their leashes. From just looking at their products, you can see that they build their dog products based on sports technology!

We also love that they incorporated zero shock technology into their leashes as we’ve all experienced that horrible jerk at the spotting of a squirrel. EzyDog also has come up with some other great leash variations from the coupler (2 dogs on one leash) to the multi-function vario.
We got the opportunity to interview EzyDog to get more of an inside look of their company and inspirations:

Tell us about EzyDog and how the company got started.

Brothers, Phil and Luke Hatcher, from Australia originally started out in the water sports industry. At the same time, John Hatcher (not related) was working for a major water-ski manufacturer in the USA. Sharing the same last name in the same small industry eventually got them introduced. Phil, Luke and John’s experience in this industry and love of dogs sparked the idea to combine the best of both worlds, which inspired the original shock absorbing leash – the Cujo.

EzyDog Neo Collar

They saw that materials from the water sports world work well for the dog market. For instance, neoprene is a very durable material that does not absorb oils so it does not get stinky like a typical nylon collar. The Cujo leash was the first product to be introduced to the pet industry and started what would eventually become EzyDog.

EzyDog officially began about 10 years ago and has developed into a highly technical, full line of dog products that focus on function, durability and unique designs. The focus has been to enhance the outdoor experience with our dogs.

EzyDog Convert Harness

Convert Harness

Tell us more about the materials used to make EzyDog products?

We make our own webbing, which allows us to more closely monitor the consistency and quality. We end up with a webbing that is super soft and extremely strong and durable. We use materials such as Neoprene for padded comfort, easy to clean and absorbs less stink than traditional materials. We also use EVA to form to the dog’s body for truly a custom fit. These “outside the box materials” make a superior product.

Summit Backpack

What are your most popular products?

Our Chest Plate and Quick Fit Harnesses along with our shock absorbing leashes are really popular. The combination of these with your pup can truly transform your walking/running experience. Our DFD (Doggy Floatation Device) and Summit Backpack continue to be popular as well. We attribute these items popularity with the ease of use and the problem solving features these items provide.

Some people might assume your products are only for large &/or tough dogs ?

While our active look may appear to cater to the medium and larger breeds, we actually make products for all shapes and sizes of dogs. The Sparky, as well as, our Lite range of leashes, use clips and webbing widths more appropriate for the smaller dogs.

EzyDog Vario Leash

This is also true of our collars and harnesses. We even have a Micro line of Life Vests. The Sparky weighs 3.9 oz while the Cujo (40 inch) weighs 6.0 oz. We do offer our Soft Trainer Leash, Vario 4 and Vario 6 leashes, as well as, couplers available in the Lite versions. Sometimes the little guys are the hardest to control and they need our products most!

Top LED Dog Collars – easily see your dog at night

LED Dog Collars

Orvis Safety Light & Glowdoggie

As the days are getting shorter, we thought it was a good time to update our LED Dog Collar recommendations.  The LED Dog Collar is a must have for any dog owner that takes their dog out at night. Not only can you better see your dog, but so can others! Wearing a dog collar light can be a great safety device and life saver.

Based on our tests, these are the Top 2 LED Dog Collars on the market that we think you’ll love. We tried to get better pictures of our own dogs with the LED Dog Collars on, but it was a challenge with it being dark outside and the dogs’ non-compliance in staying still.

Orvis Safety Light

Orvis LED Dog CollarThe Orvis Safety Light is waterproof, impact resistant, and visible up to 3 miles away. Best of all, the Orvis LED safety light fastens anywhere on your dog’s collar via a clip or hook-and-loop strap (both included). It’s like a mini flashlight on your dog’s collar. We’ll not only use this on dog walks at night, but also when we have power outages (like during Hurricane Sandy). We might even take it on a late night run.

Orvis Safety LightThe light is easily turned on by simply rotating the lens. It has both steady and flash modes. To switch from steady light to flash, just flip the battery to change the function. Allegedly, this is the light that Danish search-and-rescue teams rely on to keep their dogs visible in dark and dangerous conditions.

The light comes in clear (white), red and amber colors. It is a 100,000-hour bulb with a 250-hour battery life and weighs less than 1 oz. Being small and compact, it’s great for travel, especially since you can easily take it on and off.

Glowdoggie LED Dog Collar

Glowdoggie in green

Glowdoggie LED Dog Collar

We were impressed how bright the Glowdoggie Classic is! It’s the brightest all-around dog collar we’ve seen on the market and it’s not annoyingly bright either. Glowdoggie also makes an Ultra version which is about 50% brighter and can also run on rechargeable AAAs if desired.

The Glowdoggie (aka Leuchtie) is made and engineered in Germany. You can immediately tell it is made of robust, durable, quality components. It’s also 100% waterproof (your dog can go swimming in it) and comes with a 2 year warranty. The Glowdoggie has been tested in all types of extreme climates, from the Arctic Circle to the Western Australian Desert, and it’s used by many SAR teams around the U.S..

Glowdoggie

Fiesta tests the Glowdoggie

The Glowdoggie is unique in that it’s not actually a collar. It’s a flexible ring that you slip over your dog’s head and as such you need to order it in a specific size for it to fit your dog, i.e. there’s no way to adjust the size of the ring. There is no need to open the ring, except for changing the AAA batteries. The Glowdoggie should be used in addition to your dog’s normal collar. A nylon strap is included if you prefer to attach the Glowdoggie to your dog’s collar.

Fiesta has been using the Glowdoggie for over a year and loves it (so does her “daddy”, Luis).

Glowdoggie LED Dog CollarThere is no on/off switch on the Glowdoggie, instead, it’s turned on when the battery portion is facing down (as it is in the photo on the right) and gradually turns off when it is in the up position. Luckily there are plenty of instructional and product demonstration videos on the Glowdoggie website. The battery life is 100 hours. The Glowdoggie Classic + comes in six different colors (green, blue, aqua, red, white and pink).

Great Martingale Collars Made From Hemp

One of Kobi’s favorite styles: Wilson

I’ve been meaning to write this post about Earthdog martingale collars forever! Kobi has been wearing Earthdog collars for years and we love them!

What sparked the initial need to look for a non-synthetic collar was that Kobi has a lot of allergies and seemed to be bothered by nylon and other materials commonly used for collars. He would scratch at a lot of collars, but once we tried the Earthdog collars, Kobi seemed really comfortable in them. He’s also only 20 lbs and some of the leather collars seemed a bit too heavy / thick.

Another favorite style: sage

I also really like a Martingale collar because of the control it gives you over your dog. A martingale collar is made with two loops. The larger loop is slipped onto the dogs neck and a lead is then clipped to the smaller loop. When the dog tries to pull, the tension on the lead pulls the small loop taut, which makes the large loop smaller and tighter on the neck, thus preventing escape. Properly fitted, the collar will be comfortably loose when “not in use” or alternatively…if your dog is going along with where you want to go, it will be comfortably loose.

Many Martingale collars are made with chain, which I don’t like with my smaller dog (Kobi is a 19 lb Havanese). Over time the Earthdog hemp collars will get quite soft, but due to the construction of the Martingale collar, it will still get tighter around the neck when Kobi isn’t interested in going in the direction I’m planning to go. However, it’s not as harsh or extreme as a Martingale collar with chain.

On top of all that goodness, Earthdog products are handmade in Nashville, TN, USA. The collars come in a variety of colors and patterns.

Best of all, Kobi loves his collar. Post bath or post brushing – he’s very happy to have his collar put back on and comes over tail wagging when I bring it out.
