The Pug – Charming, Loving and Mischievous

Jaxon - the Pug

Jaxon – the Pug

We just think the Pug is so darn cute! We can’t resist the Pug’s wrinkly, short-muzzled face and curled tail. Originally bred to be a lap dog, the Pug thrives on human companionship and is known to be charming, loving and mischievous.

To get the inside scoop on the Pug, we asked one of our Dogsized fans, Kim, to tell us about her very cute 2 pugs:

How did Jaxon and Olivia come to join your family?

A while back, I reconnected with an old high school friend, Kevin, who is now my best friend. Kevin had a pug named Harley – he was the most amazing pug ever! I fell in love with the breed because of Harley. Sadly, we lost Harley in 2014 on New Years day.

Pugs

I promise to keep this couch white!

My friend Kevin finally decided he wanted to get another pug so I started to search for the perfect pug. There was one breeder I ended up talking with for months. I got to know her and her pugs…and kept a tag on Jaxon, a sweet adorable black pug puppy. We were all excited about Jaxon and everyone wanted input on his name, so officially he is Oliver Cole Biscuit Jaxon. He is sweet, loving, silly and aka Jaxon the Pug TOY DESTROYER.

At the time, I had been contemplating getting my own pug, but I just was not sure. I honestly did not think I would have a dog again, let alone a puppy.

After picking up Jaxon and meeting the breeder, I found out she had a fawn pug that was going to have puppies soon. After seeing the photos, I was in love! I got the little runt fawn girl Olivia Annabelle. Olivia is spunky, sassy and a total Diva aka Olivia the PUG QUEEN.

Pugs

Olivia rules the roost!

Jaxon and Olivia are the best of friends just like their parents are the best of friends. We are just two peas in a pod (or would that be 2 pods and 4 peas?). They are always together encouraging each other into mischief.

Do they have a favorite treat?

There favorite treat is doggie ice cream and anything chicken. Yes they will do anything for a treat.

Jaxon is the treat thief as if a bag is left out it will be gone or if there is a treat in your pocket he is an adept pickpocket… you’ve been forewarned.

What are some things that Jaxon & Olivia love to do?

Pugs

Olivia – You’re too cute!

Jaxon thinks all toys should be destroyed and works hard to destroy them. It has taken a lot of research to find toys that last more than a day with him.

Olivia is the Queen and thinks she rules the roost, including Jaxon. She has been known to let him know she wants a drink by closing the kennel door on him (they have a huge water bottle that hangs on the communal kennel in the living room for water, as they think water bowls are fun to play in not drink from) to get him to move and let her have a drink.

Jaxon thinks it is fun to torment her by stealing toys or chews she thinks she has hidden. We buy two of most everything to keep them from fighting, but Jaxon thinks its funny to get her chew and lay on it while he chews his.

Pugs

Olivia sleeping on Jaxon

They are always up for a game of Pug Wrestling. When it is time for a nap. Olivia’s favorite place is literally on top of Jaxon. They can always be found cuddling each other and great each other in the morning with kisses.

They both love to give kisses and get belly rubs. Even though sometimes they can drive you crazy, I could not imagine life without them!

In fact, Kim started a blog for them: Pug Squared.

We were surprised to learn that the Pug is one of the oldest breeds of dog – it has flourished since before 400 BC. In 1885, the Pug was officially recognized by the AKC and is part of the AKC toy group.

The Pug has a fine, glossy fur coat that most often comes in fawn or black. It has a compact square body with well-developed muscles.

Of course, the Pug is loved by celebrities, but our favorite has to be Frank the Pug from the Men in Black movies.

Yorkshire Terrier (aka Yorkie) a spunky little bundle!

Ziggy's a Yorkie

Ziggy’s a Yorkie

The Yorkie is a little dog with a big personality. We interviewed Iris about her cute 15 year old Yorkie, Ziggy, to give us the scoop about this entertaining breed:

How did Ziggy come to join your family?

Ziggy driving the car

Ziggy driving the car

Art (her husband) and I knew we wanted a dog, but weren’t sure which type to get. So we went to the Westminster Dog Show to see all the various breeds and picked a few to to go back home and research.

We were primarily looking for a small dog that was easy to travel with. On a trip in the South of France, we were sitting in an outdoor cafe, saw a Yorkie and loved his good demeanor, look and size. So when we got back to Manhattan, we started looking around for one, but didn’t find the right dog. Then on a trip to Colorado, we made some appointments with some breeders out there.

Art’s mom said to “go for the one that comes to you”, but at the first breeder’s home, all the dogs came running to them. Ziggy, the runt of the liter, somehow caught their attention with his playful, calm personality and when they went to go to the next breeder, Ziggy came down the stairs after them.

The next breeder had their dogs in horrible, dirty conditions and the last breeder’s dogs were a bit too young. So they went back and picked up Ziggy – he was “the one”.

Ziggy was such a curious little guy that zig-zagged from place to place sniffing and marking his spot. And that’s how they came up with his name. They bought a travel bag for him, which he still uses to this day. They were also very fortunate because at 8 weeks old, he was already trained to do his “business” outside.

Ziggy became a world traveling dog from trains and planes to weddings and events.

What are some of Ziggy’s favorite things to do?

He’s fifteen now and has slowed down, but in his prime he loved to play fetch and frisbee. He has a hard time seeing now, so we got a glow in the dark ball that’s easier for him to see. Ziggy also has a stuffed toy dog which they call his “girlfriend”.

Any tips for potential Yorkie owners?

Yorkies are not all yappers. We trained Ziggy to only bark when he needs something, like water. He’s very smart and protective. We found Ziggy to be easily trainable and took him to some group classes when he was a puppy.

Today, you can find this cute 15 year old Yorkie strutting around with a gait that let’s you know he’s in charge.

Zoe the Bulldog

Zoe as a puppy

The beloved Bulldog, some might be a little nervous around them, but this cute, stocky breed puts a smile on our face! We asked one of our Dogsized fans, Tracy, to us about her Bulldogs:

How did your Bulldogs come to join your family?

I have always been drawn to bulldogs! Many years ago, I went on a job with my husband and the customers had two bulldogs. While I should have been helping with the job, those Bulldogs were so cute that I ended up playing with them instead. The customers told me their daughter had a bulldog and she needed to find a home for her because they recently had a child and no time left for the dog. I immediately took her up on the offer!

Lola the Bulldog

Lola the Bulldog

Chloe was an amazing Bulldog! Unfortunately, just a few years after getting her, we found out she had very advanced congestive heart failure. When Chloe passed away in August 2008, I was completely devastated. A couple weeks later, my husband showed up with a Bulldog puppy – Zoe. I told him I didn’t want another dog…it was too much too soon. He said he couldn’t stand seeing me crying constantly (about Chloe) and a puppy would make me put my thoughts and efforts into raising this little life. Once I held Zoe, there was no turning back.

ZoeZoe was completely different from Chloe – she was a handful. A month or so later, I came across an older Bulldog in a rescue shelter. I know how hard it is to place an older dog, so I took Zoe to meet her and that added Della to the household. Della was a wonderful old girl and was a big help in teaching Zoe the ways of the world. Della passed away a couple years ago. Last June the rescue called me and said they had another girl that would fit perfectly with Zoe. So we all met Lola and she fit right in.

Zoe in the pool

Zoe enjoying the pool

What do your Bulldogs love to do?

Zoe loves to swim. Most bulldogs are not good swimmers due to their unique shape, but Zoe will go until you take her out of the pool. She is completely obsessed with the pool. If she sees someone out there she will scream and carry on until she gets to go in the pool too. She also loves to ride in the car. If you don’t let her sit in the front seat, she will cry and bark the entire ride. When she doesn’t get her way the “bull” part of Bulldog comes out full force.

Lola loves toys. She almost always has a toy in her mouth – even when she is sleeping. She also loves to go on car rides, but she is perfectly content wherever you put her. They both sleep in bed with us and Zoe is usually a quiet sleeper, but Lola snores like a freight train (like most
Bulldogs).

Any specific tips you’d like (potential) Bulldog owners to know?

Zoe at sinkBulldogs are fantastic dogs, but they are not for everyone. They need a strong yet sensitive leader. Bulldogs are very strong willed and stubborn. They are not large in size but are extremely strong physically.

They require daily care – cleaning their nose folds, eyes and tail folds to prevent infection and clean their ears weekly. They are a brachycephalic breed and because of those smushed noses they can’t take the heat and are not going to be your running partner. They don’t know their own limits and need you to set those limits or they may literally go until they drop.

I can’t imagine life without a bulldog… or two!

The Chihuahua – Small Dog, Big Personality

paris-hilton-chihuahuas

Paris Hilton & her Chihuahuas

Living in NYC, we see a lot of Chihuahuas. Every once in a while, you might even get a little surprise when one unexpectedly pops his head out of a ladies handbag. While the Chihuahua is renown for being the smallest breed of dog (weighing approximately 3-6 lb), Chihuahuas tend to think they’re the largest dog (or perhaps person) in the room.

Legally Blonde Elle Woods & Bruiser

Paris Hilton is well known as an owner of many Chihuahuas (10+) and some have credited her with using her dogs as an accessory.

On the other end of the celebrity dog ownership spectrum – Sandra Bullock has an adopted two-legged Chihuahua named Ruby and a three-legged Chihuahua-Pomeranian mix named Poppy. Two dogs and 5 legs in total.

We recently spoke with Cathy from I Love My Chihuahua to give us the scoop on this cute little dog.

Cathy's Dog Kilo

Cathy’s Dog Kilo

How did your Chihuahua come to join your family?

My neighbor had a Chihuahua and she kept getting out. Over and over, I rescued that little “Chi” because she would just stand in the middle of the road and bark. She’s black and so cars would never see her in time. Finally my neighbors moved away and left her behind (gasp!). My son rescued her and wanted to keep her for himself, but Kilo decided I was to be her pet parent. She’s been a wonderful companion.

Kilo’s favorite toys are a stuffed giraffe and a talking babble ball. Other than those 2 things, she pretty much ignores toys. She does love burrowing under blankets (all Chihuahuas do, specially since they tend to be cold a lot).

Any Grooming Tips?

Chihuahuas are fairly easy when it comes to grooming. They do tend to have dental problems so brushing their teeth at least a few times a week will help prevent or minimize dental issues.

Chihuahuas do shed but not a lot compared to some other breeds. They come in smooth coat (short hair) and long haired. The long haired version does need brushing at least every other day. Other than clipping their nails when they need it, and a bath every 2-3 weeks, that’s all the grooming they need.

Training

Many people think Chihuahuas are hard to train, but actually they’re not. The Chihuahua is highly intelligent. They tend to always try to be the Alpha in the house. So the trick is that you need to let them know that you are the Alpha, in a kind and loving way of course. Consistency is key with them. You can’t let them get away with something one time and not the next. Obedience training (for you and your dog) should be considered to ensure your Chihuahua becomes a well-behaved companion.

When taking your Chihuahua for a walk, we suggest you do not use a typical leash and collar. Because of their fragile necks, use a harness with their leash.

Because of their small size, they require little exercise and are good city dogs, but can be sensitive to cold temperatures.
